LARGE SPLINT WOOD 'BROUGHAM' GARDEN OR PANTRY BASKET | *PICK UP ONLY
Here is a large oval produce basket formed from bentwood splints with a strong
handmade construction and bentwood handle
Ideal for pantry storage or gorgeous for display perched on top of armoire or bookcase or by hearth for small kindling or paper OR could be used to store dry goods / pantry goods such as potatoes
This style of basket was developed to protect fruit and reduce/prevent fruit from spoiling; the gently curved shape helped to allow the apples to gently roll. Wood splints were steamed and formed with an oval mould and the surrounding top rim clinch was nailed in place by hand. Elm, maple and ash were all used.
This is a half bushel basket and was likely originally used for gathering & storing fresh fruit; specifically apples

In very good condition, as found; some wear to painted finish in spots & along bottom
