ANTIQUE PHOTOGRAVURE PORTRAIT OF MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS | 'EN DEUIL BLANC'

This is a beautiful antique photogravure portrait of Mary Queen of Scots created from the original painting by Clouet, who was a portraitist for the French Royal Family… and is thought to have painted the original painting around 1560

Mary is shown here ‘En Deuil Blanc’ or ‘In White Mourning’ & she is thought to have sat for the original portrait having recently lost her Father-in-law, her mother and her husband Francois II. White was a popular mourning colour in France for centuries… and here, Mary wears white mourning dress with pleated gauze ‘barbe beard’.

Mary was famed for her beauty and complexion, captured here in an incredible
photogravure, a technique invented in 1880 known for producing a sensual velvety quality.

Gilt ornate textured frame and matte are original, as found and very beautiful & quite old; I suspect this piece is from the early 1900’s

9.25” W x 11.25” H x 1” D Framed dimensions
In excellent antique condition, as found | In original frame & matte under glass, ready to hang
