ANTIQUE FRAMED PORTRAIT UNDER GLASS | FREE DELIVERY IN CANADA
This is an antique Victorian portrait of a lady, from around the mid to late 19th Century.
She is possibly in mourning dress as indicated by her black & lace dress.
The fashion of wearing an ‘indoor cap’ indicates the possible age of the portrait as this type of lace & ribbon ‘cap’ was fashionable and worn by 1840 and for a period after that…
(a small doily like covering, worn by married women at the back of their heads… lace and ribbon frill made of linen’)
The fact that she holds a book indicates some level of education , and prosperous status, that she is able to read.
To the best of my knowledge this is a 19th Century colour ‘mezzotint’ or ‘partial painting’ & framed with a period gilt frame with an acanthus texture.
The period style gilt frame and the old wood boards nailed on the back also point to the age of this piece as mid to late 19th Century.
There is hand writing on the back paper which I am unable to decipher; but I think it refers to which ‘side’ of the family this woman is from.
Despite it’s intrigue; it is a stunning piece to own and hopefully love for years to come.
12.5” W x 13.5” H x 1.5” D frame depth
In very good antique condition, as found: *existing antique frame has blemishes as found,
commensurate with age; see photos, bottom right especially
